満席状態になるライブはミュージシャンには最高の気持ちです。満席は英語でいうと『Packed house』です。土曜日に『Cafe Canon』で樹里からんとライブをやった時は正にpacked houseでした。実は席がなかったので、入れなかったお客さんも数人いました。音楽は凄く楽しくて、お客さんの反応も凄く良かったです。反応がそんなに良かったので、来て頂けなかったお客さんのために樹里さんとCafe Canonで４月８日に１８時からまた演奏します。このライブで最近一緒に作った曲を演奏しますので、是非遊びに来てね！

There's no better feeling than having a packed house at a gig. Well that's what we had on Saturday night when I played at Cafe Canon with Julee Karan. In fact they had to turn people away because there were no more seats available. The music was great and the audience was awesome. Because we had such a good response I am going to play at Cafe Canon again with Julee Karan on Sunday, April 8th at 6pm. We will be playing a new song or 2 that we wrote together so come down and partake in the fun!

金曜日の夜に島裕介と杉山未紗と千葉県にある『El Corazon』というイタリアレストランで凄く楽しいライブをやりました。ミュージシャンには（お金以外（笑）ライブの一番大切なことはお店からの親切な扱いや鑑賞力のある観客です。El Corazonのスタフ達の扱いは最高でした。食べきれないほど凄く美味しいイタリア料理を出してくれました。そしてお客さんが最初から最後までずっと真剣に聞いてくれました。完璧なライブでした！

Friday night I played a really fun gig with Yusuke Shima and Misa Sugiyama out in Chiba Prefecture at a really cool Italian restaurant called El Corazon. The 2 most important things to a fun gig(besides money) is getting good treatment from the staff and having an attentive appreciative audience. We had amazing service from the staff. They fed us more amazing food than we can handle. And we had a very attentive appreciative audience. A perfect gig!

I played a really fun solo gig last week at Owl and my friend Taketo took a lot of really cool pictures that I wanted to share.
先週新橋にある『Owl』というレストランで凄く楽しいライブをやりました。友達であり写真家でもある水島武人がカッコいい写真を撮ってもらって皆さんに見せたいです。

Cinematic Piano Paradise Live II

今までに『Cinematic Piano Paradise』の評論や売り上げがうまく進んでいます。結果として、
『Cinematic Piano Paradise』ライブをも一本やることになりました。しかし今回のライブは前回と違って、CDや私のアコースティックの側面をフィーチャーしようと思っているので、『溝口肇』や『真部裕』と公演します。ご存知の方は多いと思いますが、溝口さんは非常に素晴らしいチェロ演奏家です。２０１０年に軽井沢の大賀ホールで初めて一緒にプレーしました。そして新しいCDに『New Cinema Paradise』を弾いて頂きました。ライブでこの曲を生で初めて一緒に演奏します。そして『真部裕』という素晴らしいバイオリン奏者も参加します。真部さんも自分のストリングカルテットと僕の新しいCDに参加して頂きました。

このプロジェクトはすごく楽しくて、好評であったので、CD『Cinematic Piano Paradise 2』をやろうという話もあります。シリーズになるかも知れません。今回のライブで次のCDに入る可能性がある新しい曲をたくさんやります。特別な音楽の夜になるように約束します。

So far the reviews and sales of Cinematic Piano Paradise have been going very well. As a result, my label Omagatoki has decided to make a 2nd big promotional push. As part of the big push I will be doing another Cinematic Piano Paradise Live Show. However this time will be completely different than the last show. This time I wanted to show off the more acoustic side of the CD and my music so I asked Hajime Mizoguchi and Yu Manabe to play with me. In case you don't know Hajime Mizoguchi is an amazing cellist/composer. I had the chance to play with him 2 years ago in Karuizawa and was very fortunate to have him play "New Cinema Paradise" with me on the new CD. We will definitely be playing this song love for the 1st time. I also invited Yu Manabe who is a brilliant violinist. He also played on my CD with his string quartet.

Because this project was so much fun and has been received so well I am thinking of doing a Cinematic Piano Paradise 2. Possibly making a series of music from films. I will definitely be featuring music from the 1st CD but am planning on featuring a lot of new music that will possibly be released on future recordings. I promise this will be a very special night of music.

I've been in Japan now almost 3 years but there are still many things about this place that I don't know. This year for the 1st time I participated in a holiday called Setsubun which means seasonal division. It is a very old holiday where you take some roasted soybeans and throw them out your door trying to get rid of bad luck. Then you throw some inside hoping to bring in good luck. Then you eat some of the beans. It seems that most people don't really do this anymore but it was fun to try it and learn about an old holiday here in Japan.

ご存知の方はいるかもしれませんが、私はピアノの講師です。ほぼ３年前日本に来た時ピアノを教えようと思っていたのですが、日本語だけで教えると思いました。英語でのピアノレッスンの需要があると思わなかったです。最初に英語が出来ない子供をどうやって英語でピアノを同時に教えるか全然分からなかったです。２年間の試行錯誤の後楽しく積極的な教え方を発展してきました。ピアノレッスンでよく使う単語やフレーズがたくさんあります。例えば『も一度』『右手／左手』『はじめから』等です。毎週のレッスン新しい単語かフレーズを教えて、そして次のレッスンからその単語／フレーズを英語で話します。時間が立つにつれて、英語で話している料が多くなり、生徒さんは英語の発音を慣れてきます。生徒さんボキャブラリーもどんどん増えてきます。若い生徒さんたちには学校で英語を勉強しはじめるときにメリットになると思います。

さて、冬休みに初級のピアノの生徒さんのために英語の歌本を作ることにしました。この本の目的は生徒さんに簡単、よく使える英語の歌詞のある楽しい曲を歌わせて、歌えるようになったら耳を使ってピアノで弾かせます。家で練習出来るようにCDも録音しました。男性ボーカルは僕の声です。

本／CDはピアノの生徒さん（３−８歳）のために作ったのですが、ピアノに興味がない子供にも楽しい英語の紹介だと思います。時間があったら,

As many of you know I am a piano teacher. When I came to Japan nearly 3 years ago I wanted to teach piano but thought I would be teaching strictly in Japanese. What I didn’t know is that there is a big demand for piano lessons in English. At first I didn’t know how this would work with a child that cannot speak English. After 2 years of trial and error I have come up with a way to do both in a fun yet constructive way. In piano lessons there are many words and phrases that are said over and over. Things like “one more time,” “right/left hand” “from the beginning” etc. Each week I try and teach a new word or phrase and from the next lesson I start using that word in English. In time the % of English used in the lesson increases and the student gets used to the sound of English. I think for my younger students they will have an advantage when they begin to study English in school.

Well over the winter break I decided to make a song-book for beginning piano students. The point of the book is to learn simple yet fun songs with useful English words and then play these songs by ear on the piano. I also recorded a CD so that my students could practice the songs at home. It is my voice on the CD.

While the book/CD is intended for piano students (ages 3-8), I think it would be a fun introduction to English for any child. Omagatoki New Year's Party

日本に来てほぼ三年が立ちました。この三年間に色んなことが出来て日本に来て本当に良かっただなと思います。日本に来た直後新星堂の社長に会って、新星堂のレコードレベル『Omagatoki』との関係が始まりました。３年間以内CD４枚を出して、Omagatokiと新星堂が色んなチャンスを与えてくれました。本当に感謝しています！
今月荻窪で新年会がありました。僕が夜にライブがあったので、一時間しかいなかったのですが、レーベルメート『樹里からん』と１曲『Feel Like Making Love』を演奏しました。前共演したことあるも一人のレーベルメート『うめ吉』も１曲演奏しました。最後までいたかったのですが、今年の新年会に行けてよかったです。

It's coming up on 3 years since I made the move to Japan. In these 3 years I have had a chance to do many cool things and I'm really glad I decided to come. Right after I came to Japan I met the president of Shinseido and my relationship with Omagatoki began. In less than 3 years I have released 4 CD'S and Omagatoki has given me so many great opportunities of which I am very grateful.
This month in Tokyo Omagatoki had a New Year's Party. Since I had a gig that night I could only go for 1 hour but I got a chance to play 1 song with my label mate Julee Karan. Another label mate of mine whom I had previously performed with "Umekichi" also sang 1 number. I wish I could have stayed until the end but Im glad I was able to make it for a little bit.

New Activity

僕の家から徒歩一分くらいヨガのスタジオがあります。このスタジオを散歩するたびにヨガを試してみれば良いなと思っていました。二ヶ月前に試してみることにしました。柔軟性がまったくない人なのですが、周に２−３回くらい二ヶ月間行っているのですが、クラスが終わるたびにクラスの前より気持ちが良いです。肉体的にも精神的にも。ヨガは呼吸、瞑想や運動の完璧な組み合わせだと思います。新しいことを試してみて良かったです！

About a 1 minute walk from my house there is a yoga studio. I walk by this studio quite often and I always thought that would be a fun thing to try. A couple of months ago I decided to try it and signed up.

I am not a flexible person at all but I have been going a couple times a week and every time the class is finished I feel much better than when I started. Both mentally and physically. I think yoga is the perfect combination of breathing, meditation and exercise. Im so glad I decided to try something new!

先週友達でありコラボレータでもある樹里からんと僕の家でセッションをしました。最初に樹里が僕が作っている子供向きのピアノの本のために歌ってくれました。そして一緒にオリジナル曲を作ってみました。今日は始めての曲作りのセッションだったのですが、これから一緒にどんな音楽を作るか非常に楽しみにしています。途中に変な桂をかぶってふざけていました。

Last week I got together to work on some music with my good friend and collaborator Julee Karan. She first helped me lay down some tracks for my new Children's Piano Book which I promise to talk about later. Then we worked on some original music which I am very excited about. Today was the first session but I am excited about what we are going to be able to do together. We also messed around trying on some ridiculous wigs as you can see.

Lake Kawaguchi

冬休みのほとんどは新しい本を頑張って作っていたのですが、妻紀子と2日間の河口湖の旅にも行ってきました。ご存知であるかも知れませんが、釣りと水が大好きなので水のある所にいつも行きたいです。東京よりほんの少しだけ寒かったのですが、富士山の景色は息をのむほどきれいでした。ちょっと古い風情のある河口湖ホテルで泊まりました。旅の見所はいやしの里根場という小さいな村に行ったときでした。合掌造りのビルが非常に大好きです。去年白川郷に行ってきたのです。いやしの里根場はそれほど大きくないけど、凄くきれいな所でした。そこでもの凄く美味しい手打ち蕎麦やほうとうを食べました！ちょっと短かったのですが、気分転換が出来た旅でした。

I spent most of my winter vacation working on a new book which I will post about later but I did take a very nice 2 day trip to Lake Kawaguchi with my wife Noriko. In case you don't know I love fishing and water so I always look for places to go where there is water to look at. It was only slightly colder than Tokyo and the view of Mount Fuji was breathtaking. We stayed at an old hotel which had a very quaint charm about it. The highlight of the trip was taking a bus to a small village where the buildings are preserved in their ancient style. They call this "Gassho Zukuri" which means built in the shape of the way one prays with your hands. If you look at the picture I think you can see what I mean. We had the most amazing Soba Noodles. Anyway, it was a short but very refreshing vacation.

最近ブログを怠っていたのですが、今日から定期的にアップデートすることにした。これからお楽しみにしてもらえたらなと思います。

大抵大晦日にライブをやっているのですが、去年たまたまお休みでした。で、家の近くの神社に行って、鐘を鳴らして、伝統的な日本のお正月をはじめて味わいました。４０分くらい列に並び、２０１１年の悪い運などが消し去れたら良いなと思いました。普段アメリカで大晦日の真夜中に道にいる人が花火をあげたり、銃を打ったり、車のクラクションを鳴らしたりして大騒ぎを起こします。日本でたくさんの家族が神社で集まって、平和に大晦日を楽しんで目を見張りました。込んでいる神社以外空いている店がほぼなかったです。これもアメリカと日本の大晦日のもう一つの大きいな違いです。

もしかしたら今年の大晦日にライブがなかったら、また神社に行くかも知れません。

I have really let my blog go since the new year but decided to get back to regularly updating it today. So stay tuned for more frequent updates.
I will start with this year off writing about how I spent New Year's.
I almost always play a gig on New Year's Eve but this year I happened to have the night off. So I decided to taste what a traditional Japanese New Year's is like by going to the Shrine near my house and literally ringing in the New Year. I waited in line for about 40 minutes in order to ring the bell and hopefully wiped away any ill luck or bad deeds of 2011 so I can start 2012 with a clean slate. This is the thinking behind the ancient Buddhist tradition. Typically in America around midnight on New Year's Eve most people awake would be drunk and you would hear lots of firecrackers, gun shots, honking cars etc. It was refreshing to see a lot of families gathered at the shrine peacefully ringing in the New Year. Aside from the bustling shrine almost everything else in the city is closed on New Year's Eve. Another big difference between Japan and America.
If I'm not working next New Year's Eve I might partake in the festivities one more time.

昨日新三郷で『Roland』に主催されたクリスマスコンサートに出演しました。クリスマスのイルミネーションは非常にきれいでした。そんなに寒い天気にピアノを弾くのが大変なのですが、最後まで手を凍らさせないように頑張りました。寒い天気にもかかわらずお客さんが最後までいてくれてとても感謝しました！

I played a very nice Christmas concert in Saitama Prefecture last night sponsored by Roland. The Christmas illumination was really beautiful. It was very cold weather to play the piano in but somehow I managed to keep my hands warm enough to play a concert in 40 degree weather. I also was very appreciative that the audience stayed the whole time in the cold weather.

Christmas in Saitama

今日の昼クリスマスコンサートのために埼玉県にある飯能という町に行ってきました。駅に着いた時駅ビル以外店等はあまりないということに気がつきました。僕のコンサートにお客さんが来るかなと思いました。とても驚いたことには、駅ビルの中にヤマハグランドピアノやクリスマス風に飾った素敵なステージのある場所がちゃんと用意されました。２ステージをやって、１ステージずつ８０人ぐらいが入って、どちらも満席状態でした。どちらものステージが終わったら、お客さんがコンサートで買ってくれたCDや譜面にサインしてもらう為に、そして僕と拍手するために何十人が並んでくれました。

凄く良いコンサートでした！

また飯能に行くのを楽しみにしています！

This afternoon I went to a small city called Hanno in Saitama Prefecture to play a Christmas Concert. When I arrived at the station I was surprised that there wasn't much there other than the station building. I wondered if there would be many people at the concert. Well to my surprise, they set up a very nice space in the station building with a very nice Yamaha Grand Piano and a nicely decorated Christmas stage. I played 2 stages and both were packed with about 80 people per piece. After each show people lined up to shake my hand and have me sign a CD or sheet music that they bought at the show.

Futako-tamagawa Christmas Piano Concert

Yesterday I played a really fun gig inside Takashimaya Mall in Futako Tamagawa. I was one of the feature pianists for their Christmas Piano Concert Series. I played a lot of Christmas songs as well as some new songs from the CD. The biggest applause came from Libertango and Lupin the 3rd. Check out the picks that Mr. Hayakawa from Omagatoki took.

CD Release Party at Blues Alley

昨日の夜のライブは日本に来て一番楽しかったライブといっても過言ではないです。第一にBlues Alleyは最高のジャズクラブです。間取りは生音楽にぴったり合っているし音も凄く良いです。お店に置いてあるスタインウエイグランドピアノは凄く弾きやすかったです。そしてコンディションの良いフェンダーローズも置いてありました。ほとんどピアノを弾いたのですが、２曲をローズで弾きました。

第二に１００人以上が来て、満席状態でした。観客からのエネルギーにインスピレーションを受けて僕の最高のプレーが出来ました。絶対家でそんな風にピアノを弾けません。

第三にバンドメンバーやゲストミュージシャンは最高でした。いつものベースの高道晴久やドラムの二本末義史とライブするたびに楽しいライブになるに違いないのですが、昨日の夜プロデューサーでありギターリストでもある大里和雄もいました。素敵なバンドと演奏する上に素晴らしいゲストミュージシャンの４人もいました；樹里からん、Mitsuko, 島裕介や畠山美由紀。ゲストは皆別々に出演したのですが、最後の曲に皆で『Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas』を演奏しました。凄く良い終わり方でした。

演奏が終わったらCDをたくさんサインして、たくさんのファンを挨拶しました。参加してくれたミュージシャンや手伝ってくれたスタフにとても感謝しています。そしてライブに来てくれたお客さんにもとても感謝しています。

Yesterday’s show at Blues Alley was probably the most fun I’ve had at a show since coming to Japan. First off Blues Alley is a great jazz club to play at. The layout is ideal for live music and the sound is amazing. They have a very nice Steinway grand piano as well as a Fender Rhodes in perfect condition.

Secondly the place was packed with over 100 people. The energy I got from the audience last night inspired me to play my best. There’s now way I can play like that at home by myself.

Thirdly the lineup of musicians and guests was amazing. Anytime I get to work with my regular trio with Yoshifumi Nihonmatsu on drums and Haruhisa Takamichi on bass I know it’s going to be a fun gig. But last night I also got to work with producer and guitarist Kazuo Ohsato on guitar who added a very nice element to the band. On top of the great band I got to work with 4 different amazing guest musicians; Julee Karan,Mitsuko, Yusuke Shima and Miyuki Hatakeyama.

After the show I signed a bunch of CD’S and got to greet a lot of fans. I am really grateful to all the musicians who participated as well as all the staff who helped put on a great show. I am also very grateful for everyone who came up to my show on Tuesday night.

Ogikubo Music Festival

今日は荻窪音楽祭に出ました。８０人ぐらいが来てくれました。
『Cinematic Piano Paradise』の中心に演奏していきました。凄く楽しいライブでした！

I played at the Ogikubo Music Festival today. About 80 people showed up.
I featured mostly music from the new CD. It was a really fun gig!

先週の週末に三日間の西日本のプロモーションツアーに行ってきました。名古屋、大阪や神戸で新星堂のインストアエベントをやりました。お客さんが結構入っていたしCDもたくさん売れました！『FM Cocolo』と『Kiss-FM神戸』のラジオ番組にもゲストで出演しました。FM CocoloのDJはアメリカ人『Kamasami Kong』だったので、久しぶりに英語でインタビューされました。

短いツアーだったのですが、色々やりました！

This past weekend I went on a 3 day promotional tour for my new CD to West Japan. I played in-store events at Shinseido in Nagoya, Osaka and Kobe. Had a nice crowd at each event and sold quite a few CD’s. I was also on 2 radio shows as a guest talking about my new CD. I got to do my first interview in English in a very long time withKamasami Kong on FM Cocolo in Osaka and did another interview/live performance on Kiss FM-Kobe.

Last night I played a really fun duo gig with my friend and collaborator Yusuke Shima. We played at one of my favorite restaurants in Shinbashi called “Owl.” The crowd was extremely enthusiastic and after ever song we received applause so loud it almost hurt my ears. I thought bringing 10 copies of my new CD would be enough but I sold out! What a great show! Taketo Mizushima took these great pictures.

今日はFMFujiの『Sweets Cafe』というラジオ番組に出ました。ホストの西本淑子さんの作ったもの凄く美味しいカボチャプリンを食べさせてもらいました！Yummy! かなり長くインタビューされて、新しいCDの中から２曲をかけてもらいました。とても楽しかったです！

Today I was a guest on a show called Sweets Cafe on FM Fuji Radio. I got to eat this amazing pumpkin pudding that the host Yoshiko Nishimoto made. Yummy! I was interviewed for quite a long time and Yoshiko played a couple of tracks off my new CD. Good times!

Today is the official release date of my new CD “Cinematic Piano Paradise.” This CD was so much fun to make and I am really excited that it is now released. I want to thank all the amazing musicians who participated in this album.

Hofu and Onomichi

防府市や尾道市に行くのは始めてでした。防府市のライブ『Jazz屋』はほぼ満席の状態で、凄く良かったです。ツアーの最後のライブは尾道にありました。ドラマ『広大樋口』の故郷です。樋口さんに地元のお好み焼きやに連れてきてもらって、本格的な広島風のお好み焼きを食べさせてもらいました。めちゃ美味しかったです。アメリカ的なライブハウス『Oye Como Va』でライブをやって、樋口さんの家族や友達に歓迎してもらいました。長い帰りのドライブの前に樋口さんの故郷にある好きな所に連れてきてくれました。息をのむような景色でした。

その後、東京への長い１０時間の帰りのドライブをしました。

最高のツアーでした！

This was my first time to both Hofu and Onomichi. We had a really great show in Hofu at a place called Jazzya to a nearly packed house. We finished up the tour in Onomichi, which is a medium sized town in Hiroshima prefecture. This is the hometown of the drummer Kodai Higuchi. Kodai took us to a super local okonomiyaki restaurant where we had some authentic Hiroshima okonomiyaki. Okonomiyaki is sort of like a Japanese omelette/pizza. In Hiroshima they like to mix in yakisoba noodles. We played at a cool local American pub called Oye Como Va and Kodai’s family and friends gave us a very warm welcome. Before making the drive back Kodai gave us the tour of his hometown. The scenery was really breathtaking.

Afterwards we made the long 10 hour drive home back to Tokyo.

What a great tour!!!!

Part 4 Kyushu

九州でライブ２本をやりました。最初のライブは佐賀市でした。着いた時に主催者城島さんが凄く美味しい寿司屋に連れてきてくれました。こんな新鮮なイカを食べたことないです。言っていることが分かるようにこのビデオをチェックしてみて下さい。

翌日の夜に『Cinematic』というジャズクラブで演奏しました。近くにある大学からのジャズを勉強している大学生達の数人が来てくれました。翌日の夜に福岡に行きました。福岡に行くのは２回目でした。ダウンタウンにある『New Combo Jazz Inn』というジャズクラブで演奏しました。『Along Together』のピアノソロのビデオをチェックしてみて下さい。

We played 2 shows in Kyushu, which is a separate island south of the main island of Honshu. The first show was in a city called Saga. When we arrived Mr. Jojima, the coordinator, greeted us by taking us to an amazing sushi restaurant. The squid couldn’t have been any fresher. Watch this video to see what I mean.
The following evening we played at a jazz club called Cinematic. Quite a few jazz students at the nearby university came. The following evening we drove about 1 hour to the biggest city in Kyushu called Fukuoka. This was my 2^nd time in Fukuoka and it is one of my favorite big cities anywhere. We played at a place in downtown called New Combo Jazz Inn. Check out this video of my piano solo on Alone Together.

人口に対して鳥取県は日本の最も小さい県です。人数は少ないといえども、魅力や活力に欠けていません。鳥取に行くのは三回目だったのですが、有名な『寿司銀』で演奏するのは２回目でした。たくさんの有名な日本人のジャズミュージシャンがツアーするときにこの特別な寿司屋によります。『Ron Carter』も寿司銀で出演したことがあります。お客さんはとても元気で、凄く興奮してくれました。最高のショーの後に美味しい寿司をたっぷりごちそうしてもらいました。その後皆で鳥取にある大好きな『Mobs/Fellas』というバーに行きました。鳥取に来るたびにかならずこのバー行きます。ヤクザぽい名前があるのですが、魅力にあふれて、食事やお茶も凄く美味しいです。

※Mob『マブ』という単語はヤクザという意味です。Mobs『マブズ』はMobの複数形です。Fellas『フェラズ』という単語は人たちという意味なのですが、イタリアのヤクザの人たちがよく使うので、ヤクザの意味合いがあります。

Tottori prefecture is the least populated of any of the 47 prefectures in Japan and is located on the Japan Sea side of Japan about a 10-hour drive from Tokyo. While it may lack in numbers it certainly doesn’t lack in charm and energy. This was my 3^rd time in Tottori and my 2^nd time playing at the famous Sushi Gin. Many famous Japanese musicians make a stop here on their japan tours and even Ron Carter has performed at this special sushi bar. The customers are full of energy and very enthusiastic about listening to jazz. We had a great show and were treated to an amazing sushi feast afterwards. Afterwards, we headed down to my favorite bar in Tottori called Mobs/Fellas. I go there everytime I come to Tottori. The name sounds a little bit sketchy but it is overwhelming with charm and it has great food and amazing tea.

今日の朝普通より早く起きて、インタビュー／生演奏のために別所哲也の『J-Wave Tokyo Morning Radio』ラジオ番組に出ました。ちょっと緊張していたのですが、凄く楽しくてうまく行ったと思います。別所哲也さんは凄く良い人でした。『Over the Rainbow』を弾いて、色々話して、別所さんが来月に出るCDから２曲をかけてくれました！

Well, I got up way early than normal to do an interview/live performance on J-Wave Radio with Testuya Besho this morning. Tetsuya is a famous actor in Japan and is also the host of the biggest morning radio show in Tokyo. I was a little nervous but it was a lot of fun and I think it went well. I played "Over the Rainbow," we chatted for about 10 minutes or so and Tetsuya played a couple of tracks from my upcoming CD!

今日はセンター南で友達でありコラボレータでもあるPhillip Hunterと凄く楽しいライブをやりました。ほぼ１年半にわたって月に一回ライブをやっている『Cafe Canon』という場所で演奏しました。『Cafe Canon』は居心地の良い場所だけではなく食事もとてもおいしいし店員さんたちも親切です。今日は私の生徒さん３人を含めて満席の状態でした。僕たちミュージシャンを含めて皆さんがとても楽しい時を過ごしていたみたいでした。違う都市や国でライブをするのが好きですが、家の近くにある地元的な場所で僕と同じコミュニティーに住んでいる方々のために演奏するのも大好きです。ローカルミュージックの大切さがよく過小評価されていると思います。

来月、１０月２１日に１９時−２１時『Cafe Canon』でソロのミニCDリリースパーティーライブをやります。この魅力的なカフェを楽しみに来て下さい。

I played a really fun duo gig tonight in Center Minami with my friend and collaborator Phillip Hunter. We played at a place that I have been playing once a month for a year and a half now called Cafe Canon. Cafe Canon is a small yet charming cafe with amazing food and really friendly staff. Tonight we had a packed house including several of my piano students. Everyone seemed to be having a great time including us musicians. Although I love playing in different cities and countries, there is something really great about playing at a local place close to my house for people who live in the same community that I do. I think the importance of local music in a community is underrated.
Anyway, I am going to be doing a mini CD-release party next month at Cafe Canon on Friday, October 21st from 7-9pm. Please come down and enjoy this wonderful charming cafe.

I played a really fun gig with a great saxophonist, Shu Ishikawa, and his band last night. We played a lot of cool up-tempo grooves which I haven't done much of recently but wouldn't mind doing of more of. We played at a very cool new branch of a club called "Tokyo Club" in Meguro.

This is something that I have been wanting to start doing for a long time but just haven't been able to dedicate the time to get it started. I actually have a lot of sheet music that I've either written or arranged on my computer over the years and always thought it would be a good idea to sell it. Well this week I decided that I was not going to wait anymore and went out and got a special printer and the tools I needed to make my own sheet music. 先週南青山にある居心地の良い『マンダラ』というジャズクラブで僕のトリオや樹里からんと出演しました。友達、家族、メディアや『オーマガトキ』の方々を含めて満席の状態で１００人ぐらいがいらっしゃいました。インストルメンタルの部分は１０月に出るCD『Cinematic Piano Paradise』からの新しいアレンジ『New Cinema Paradise』『ノルウェーの森』や『スマイル』等をフィーチャーしました。樹里と公演した時に樹里のアレンジや僕の最近作ったアレンジStingの『Shape of My Heart』や『コスモス』等演奏しました。凄く楽しいライブでした！友達『水島武人』が素晴らしい写真を撮ってくれました！

Last week I played a really amazing gig with my trio and Julee Karan at a beautiful jazz club in Tokyo called Mandala. We had a packed house of about 100 people which included friends, family, press and people from both Omagatoki Records which happens to be both mine and Julee's record label. For the instrumental parts I featured some of my new arrangements from the upcoming CD like "New Cinema Paradise," "Norwegian Wood," and "Smile." With Julee we played many of her arrangements plus a couple of songs that I recently arranged for her. Sting's "Shape of My Heart and a Japanese song called "Kosumosu." It was a really fun gig! My friend Taketo Mizushima took these amazing pictures!

Sumida Jazz Festival

Last night I played for the second year in a row at The Sumida Jazz Festival. I played with my trio, Yoshifumi Nihonmatsu (drums) and Haruhisa Takamichi, in the beautiful Triphony Hall. It was a really fun concert thanks to a very enthusiastic crowd and a beautiful sounding hall. Afterwards I got to sign quite a few CD's and talk to some of the audience. I really hope I can do it again next year. I am very grateful to everyone who came to my performance and also to Sumida Jazz Festival for inviting me to perform!

昨日の夜去年ンに続き二年目のすみだジャズフェスタバールに出演しました。僕のトリオ、二本松義史(ds)高道晴久(bs)と非常にきれいなトリフォニーホールで演奏しました。お客さんの熱い反応やホールの美しい響きのおがげとても楽しいコンサートでした。演奏が終わったらCD何枚サインして観客の数人と話しました。また来年出演出来れば良いですね。演奏に来てくれたお客さんやすみだジャズフェスタバールの方々にとても感謝しています！

Few Last Words About My Trip to Italy

帰りの飛行機の中でエントリーを書いています。パリで乗り換えて、東京在住の友達「Thomas」に偶然出くわした。同じ飛行機に乗っています。超偶然じゃない？短い旅だったのですが、一生忘れられない経験でした。面白い音楽をやって、めちゃ美味しい食事を食べ過ぎちゃって、ナポリに恋しました。ナポリに行ってすぐナポリの人々の溢れている自身を気がついたのです。最初にコーヒー屋に行って、隣の店の店員さんが外人とどうしても喋りたいので、仕事から休憩を取って、うちらのテーブルに会いに来ました。英語が全く出来なくてもおびえず自身満々にうちらと頑張って会話しようとしました。会話の内容はあまり覚えていないのですが、彼の自身に本当に羨ましかったです。ナポリ人はナポリの料理や文化にとても誇りに思っているのですが、同時に外国人を温かくもてなしてくれます。イタリア語で５つの単語しか言えないのですが、家族のように優しくしてもらいました。ナポリに凄く感謝しています。お世話してくれた「davide」にも感謝しています。めちゃ格好イイ「The Mantra」というバンドのベーシスト／キーボーディストです。『ブレーンキラー』と同じ『Rare Noise Records』というレベルでcdを出しています。全面的に一生忘れられない旅だった‼

I am writing this entry on the flight back to Tokyo. In Paris where I transferred I ran into my friend thomas from Tokyo and we are on the same flight back. What are the odds? It was a short trip to Italy but an unforgettable experience. Played some great music, ate way too much good food and fell in love with naples. I noticed right away that the people of naples had an overwhelming confidence but was amazed that it didn't in anyway translate into arrogance. Right after we arrived in naples we went to a coffee shop and a guy working in the shop next door took a break so he could chat with the foreigners. He hardly spoke a word of english but he had absolutely no fear to try. I dont clearly remember nor understood what we talked about but i was impressed with his fearless confidence. People from naples are very proud of their food and culture and at the same time extremely welcoming. Although i only know about 5 words of italian they made me feel at home. I am very appreciative of Naples and davide who took great care of us! He is the bassist and keyboardist in a really cool rock band called The Mantra. They are on the same label as brainkiller called Rare Noise Records. All in all an unforgettable trip to italy!

昨日の夜ジェノバイタリアにある『Gezmataz Jazz Festival』で僕ら『ブレーンキラー』が凄く良い演奏をしていました！お客さんが盛り上がってくれたしCDが売れ切れになりました。最高のイタリアの初公演でした！今日は飛行機でナポリに行って、始めてモッツレーラチーズを食べました。今までに食べたのは偽物だと分かりました！

We (Brainkiller) played an amazing show last night at Gezmataz Jazz Festival in Genoa, Italy. We had a very enthusiastic crowd and we sold out of CD’s. What a great way to kick things off in Italy. Today in Naples I had mozzarella cheese for the first time. What I've had up until now no longer qualifies.

I’m off to Italy today to go play at a jazz festival with my band Brainkiller. Brainkiller is a 3 piece (trombone, keys and drums) jazz, rock, experimental etc. unit. 昨日の朝から今日の夜まで『一口坂』というもの凄くファンシーなスタジオに引き込まれて、素敵なボーカリストであり作曲家でもある『杉山未紗』のプロジェクトの為にピアノを弾いていました。友達でありプロデューサーでもある『島裕介』に楽しいセッションに参加させてもらいました。今年の秋に『Pony Canyon』からリリースする予定です。お楽しみにしてね！

前回ブログをアップしてから少し時間が経ちました。その上に最後の二週間にライブも全然やっていません。ご心配なく、家に引きこもって海藻チップスを食べたりゲームをやったりしているというわけではないのです。一所懸命次のcdをアレンジしたり練習したりすることをしていました。新しいcdのテーマは映画の音楽です。『オーバー•ザー•レーンボー』、『スマイル』や『ヌー•シネマ•パラダイス』などの曲が入っています。２ー３曲はソロピアノで、２ー３曲はトリオで、そしてチェロの方、4人のボーカルの方、トロンボーンの方、ストリングカルテット、ギーターの方、フルートの方やラッパの方などのゲストミュージシャンがたくさん参加しててくれました。ちゃんとにこのレコーディングについて細かく書こうとしたら２０ページぐらいかかると思うので、最初にレプロジェクトの概要を説明して、後で参加してくれた素晴らしいミュージシャンについて一人ずつブログを書いて行こうと思っています。ミックスがまだできていないとは言えレコーディングの全体は基本的に完成しました。最初に想像したイメージを超えました‼ cdは十月に出る予定ですが、十一月にcdに参加してくれたミュージシャンをフェーチャして特別なコンサートを計画している最中です。コンサート二本をやるかも知れません。これからこのプロジェクトについての細かいブログのエントリーを楽しみにしてください。カメラマンであり友達である水島武人がブログに載っている素敵な写真を撮ってくれました。

It's been a little while since my last blog and I haven't played any gigs in a couple of weeks. Dont worry I havent been locked inside my house playing video games and eating seaweed chips. I've been very busy working on my next CD. The new album is a tribute to cinema featuring some of the most memorable classics that have found their way to the big screen. Songs like "Somewhere Over the Rainbow," "Smile" and "New Cinema Paradiso." There are several solo piano pieces, several trio pieces as well as a multitude of guest musicians including 4 vocalists, a trombonist, a string quartet, a guitarist, a cellist, a flutist and a trumpeter. If I were to properly write about this recording session it would probably take about 20 pages so I decided to start with an overview of the CD and then do a blog entry for each of the amazing musicians who participated in the cd. Although the mix is not completed the majority of the recording is and I have to admit that it came out better than I had anticipated. The album will be released in october and I will be doing a couple of special concerts featuring the guests who participated in the cd. Stay tuned for more detailed blog entries about the new project. The photography is taken by my good friend and cameraman Taketo Mizushima.

先週の金曜日の夜に友達であり、コラボレーターでもある作曲家兼ギターリスト『田中裕一』とライブをやりました。ほぼ１年前に田中さんが僕をピアニストに新しいバンドを組んで、昨年の１２月に田中さんのオリジナル曲を収録して、来月『AHill of the Sun』というCDがリリースすることになりました。レベールは『What’s New Records』と言います。

ライブの話をする前に田中さんとどうやって知り合いになったということを説明したいと思います。

ちょうど２年前に日本で活動しているジャズミュージシャンをほとんど誰も知らず、日本に引っ越してきました。東京のジャズシーンに入りたかったのですが、誰も知らなかったので、どうすれば良いか悩んでいました。ジャズミュージシャンと会いたいなら、世界中の一番良い方法はジャムセッションに行くことです。東京周辺ではジャムセッションがたくさんありますので、最初にどこのジャムセッションに行けば良いか決めかねました。オンラインでジャムセッションのホストのmp3等をたくさん聞いて、田中さんのホームページを見つけて、本当に面白い音だなと思って、最初に田中さんのジャムセッションに行くことにしました。新しい国や新しい文化だけではなく僕の第二言語で初めてミュージシャンと会うのを大変緊張していました。ローカルのジャズミュージシャン達が僕のことを歓迎してくれるかどうか心配していました。この場所にいる人が見ず知らずのアメリカ人のジャズピアニストが来ると思わなかったみたいだったのですが、歓迎して、僕がジャムセッションに来て喜んでくれました。バンドと２−３曲を弾いて、休憩の時に田中さんやベーシスト多田和弘と色々しゃべりました。２人とも他のライブに誘って、たくさんのミュージシャンに紹介して、本当に僕の世話をしてくれました。このジャムセッションをきっかけに、僕のミュージシャンの知り合いの輪が大きく広がりました。

ライブの話に戻ります。

CDと同じメンバーで東中野にある『Thelonius』という小さい居心地の良いジャズクラブで演奏しました。ほぼ満席の状態でお客さんが本当に興奮してくれました。写真家の友達、水島さん、も来て、素敵な写真をたくさん撮ってくれました。後でブログに載せます。も１人がビデオを撮って、YouTubeにアップロードしてくれました。これもCheck it outして下さい。

I played this past Friday night with one of my really good friends and collaborator, guitarist and composer, Yuichi Tanaka. About a year ago Yuichi started a regular quartet with me on piano. Last December we recorded a new CD called “AHill of the Sun” that will be released next month on a label called What’s New Records.

Before I get to the gig let me tell you about how I know Yuichi.

I came to Japan exactly 2 years ago and when I came I didn’t know anyone in the jazz scene in Tokyo. So I did a lot of research online. There are a lot of jam sessions happening in Tokyo so I figured this would be a good way to get started. I listened to the music of many different musicians who were hosting jam sessions and when I came across Yuichi’s site I checked out his mp3’s online and knew this was where I should start. I went to the session that he was hosting and was really nervous because this was my first time trying to meet musicians in a completely new country, in a new language and a new culture. I had no idea if I would be welcomed by the local musicians or not. I think the people at the place were a little surprised that some random American jazz pianist dropped in on their jam session but they made me feel so welcome and were really happy that I came. I played a few tunes with the band and talked with Yuichi and the bassist Kazuhiro Tada and told them I just moved here and that I was trying to meet some jazz musicians. Yuichi and Kazuhiro both invited me to their other gigs and introduced me to many musicians which really helped me find my way into the music scene here in Japan. In fact I can trace almost every musician I know now in Japan back to this one jam session.

Getting back to the Gig...

We played with the same members from the recording in a place called “Thelonius” in a part of Tokyo called Nakano. It is a small yet cozy jazz club and we had a nice enthusiastic audience. My friend Taketo, who is a great photographer, dropped by and took some really cool shots of us as well. I will post them later. 昨日荻窪音楽祭で２度目に演奏させて頂きました。音楽祭は荻窪にある新星堂の本社で行われました。ご存知かもしれませんが、僕のレコード会社『オーマガトキ』は新星堂のレコードレーベルです。１年に３−４回新星堂の本社で特別なエベント等のために演奏してきました。僕がスターという訳ではないのに、ビルに入るや否やいつも新星堂の人たちが、僕がスターであるように歓迎してくれます。１００人ぐらいが本社で働いているのですが、普通考える大きいな会社での冷たい環境という感じではなく、まるで大きいな家族のような明るいフレンドリな環境です。こんな素晴らしい会社に支えられているということに本当に感謝しています。音楽祭の話に戻ると。。。。

６０人の前でソロで一つの４０分のステージをやりました。ショパンの３曲やChick Coreaの曲やジャズ風にアレンジした『銀河鉄道９９９』を届きしました。アンコールのために最近作った『Over the Rainbow』のアレンジを届きしました。このアレンジは１０月に出る僕の次のCDに入ります。砂田社長と社長の奥さんを含んで、来てくれたお客さんのうちの半分ぐらいは知っている人でした。お客さんがすごく良い反応をしてくれました。荻窪音楽祭が春と秋１年に２回行われています。今年の秋にまた出演出来れば、本当に嬉しいです！！！

ENGLISH VERSION

Yesterday, I had the privilege of performing for the 2nd time at the Ogikubo Music Festival. The venue of the performance was on the 1st floor of the Shinseido building in Ogikubo which is an older area of Tokyo. In case you don't know, Shinseido is the name of a CD/Instrument chain store here in Japan. They are also the owner of my record label here in Japan called Omagatoki.

Several times a year I get an opportunity to perform for some kind of special event at the main office of Shinseido and I am always greeted with an overwhelming welcome. I feel like a star whenever I walk in the building. There are probably around 100 people that work in the main office and it is clearly evident that it is more like a big family than a big company. I am very grateful to have the support of such a wonderful company.

Getting back to the festival....

I played 1 40 minute set of music for about 40 people. I mixed a few of my Chopin arrangements with an original, a Chick Corea piece and a jazz arrangement I made of a classic Japanese anime theme song called Ginga Tetsudo 999. For an encore I previewed a new arrangement I recently started working on of Over the Rainbow. This will be on my next CD which will be released in October. I recognized about half the people at the show including the president of Shinseido and Omagatoki, Mr. Sunada along with his wife. The response from the audience was great. This festival is held twice a year, once in the spring and once in the fall. I really hope they invite me back this fall!!!

American in Kurashiki

一ヶ月前『倉敷』という町があるというのは全く知りませんでした。今僕の大好きな場所になったと言えます。昨日の朝、レーべルメートであり、友達でもある『樹里からん』と演奏するために新幹線に乗って倉敷に向かいました。樹里さんは素晴らしいジャズやポップスのボーカリストです。ほぼ２年前、樹里さんに初めて会ったのですが、今年の１月から一緒に演奏し始めたところです。僕の次のCDにゲストとして１曲を歌ってくれることになってすごく嬉しいです。小さい居心地の良い『胤』というバーの２６周年記念のために２人で演奏してきました。『胤』にいらっしゃるお客様のほとんどは常連です。常連たちがこの特別なイベントのために、皆さんがそれぞれ手伝ってくれました。非常に親切な彼らが弁当を作ったり、機材を借りたり、チラシを作ったり、チケットを販売したりすることなど、無償で働いてくれました。入れ替え制の２ステージのライブでしたが、両ステージに来てくれたお客さんの数は少なくありませんでした。演奏中にお客さんがものすごく興奮してくれました。

２ステージ目が終わったら、お客さんはアンコールを２回してくれるほど興奮していました。本当にありがたいことです。

日本で日本人のお客さんに自分のユーモアを伝えるのがなかなか難しいのですが、昨日のライブでお客さんが２回爆笑してくれました。まだかすかな望みがありそうです。演奏中に『ライブ楽しいですか？』と樹里さんに聞かれた時『ボッケー楽しい』と返事しました。ほとんどのお客さんは、僕が日本語が話せるどころか、最初に言い出すのが岡山弁だということを期待してなかったので、驚いて爆笑しました。２回目はスティングの有名な『English Man in New York』という曲を演奏する直前でした。ライブの前に冗談でこの曲のメロディーを歌ってみましたが、歌詞を『English Man in New York』から『American in Kurashiki』に変えました。僕のバージョンを歌って下さいと樹里さんに言われた時、さびを歌って、皆さんが２回目の爆笑をしてくれました。Yeah! 日本で僕のユーモアが伝わる望みがまだあるかも知れません。あるいは、倉敷の人々だけが僕のユーモアを理解してくれたのかもしれません。

ライブが終わったら、泊まったホテルで『胤』の常連たちが素敵な打ち上げを行ってくれました。大歓迎してくれて、とても感謝しています。今日の朝に倉敷の中心のほうに散歩に行きました。倉敷の形式や町並みが非常にきれいで、穏やかでした。昔の日本風に保存されているビルや寺や、道路等がある大きな地区がありました。京都にある地区みたいだと思いましたが、観光客はあまりいないので、とても平和な感じでした。最初から最後まで、最高な旅でした。

いつか倉敷に、また訪れるのを楽しみにしています！

ENGLISH VERSION

One month ago I had no idea that there was a town in Japan called Kurashiki. Today I would have to say it has become one of my favorite places. Yesterday, I hopped on the Bullet Train to go to Kurashiki, in the western part of Honshu, to perform with my label mate and good friend Julee Karan. Julee is a fantastic japanese jazz/pop vocalist whom I met nearly 2 years ago. This year we have started working together and I am really excited that she is going to be a guest on my next CD. We performed for the 26^th anniversary of a small, quaint and friendly local bar called Tsugu. This bar is the epitome of a Japanese “Cheers.” All the customers know each other and they all helped out to put on this special event. One guy rented the sound system. One guy made the fliers. One guy sold the tickets etc… We played 2 sets that were for 2 different sets of audiences although there were a few die-hard fans that paid to see both sets. I could feel the excitement and anticipation from the crowd and I think both Julee and I fed off this energy and had a really inspiring concert. The crowd was so into it that after the second set they demanded that we do 2 encores.

I have struggled in Japan to make my sense of humor connect with Japanese audiences but yesterday I received 2 roaring laughs from the crowd, which gives me a glimmer of hope. The first time Julee asked me if I was having fun and I replied “bokke tanoshii.” This is the way to say I’m having fun using the local dialect of the area. I don’t think most people expected me to be able to speak much Japanese so when the first thing I said was something in their own dialect they found it hilarious. The 2^nd roaring laugh came right before we performed the famous song by Sting called “Englishman in New York.” Before the gig jokingly I started to sing the melody of the song but changed the lyrics to “an American in Kurashiki.” Julee asked me to sing it in front of the crowd, which I did, and they found it hilarious. Maybe there is still hope for my sense of humor in Japan. Or maybe it’s only the people in Kurashiki who get it.

After the gig the bar threw a very fancy party for us with amazing food and drinks at the hotel we stayed at. They treated us like royalty and I am so grateful for their amazing hospitality. This morning we took a walk around the town and it is very beautiful and serene. There is a fairly large section of the town where all the buildings, streets, sidewalks and temples are preserved in the original old-style of Japan. It reminded me of parts of Kyoto but without the massive amount of tourists. Overall, what an awesome trip!

I can’t wait to go back!
