Let's Play Piano English Song Book Level 1

As many of you know I am a piano teacher. When I came to Japan nearly 3 years ago I wanted to teach piano but thought I would be teaching strictly in Japanese. What I didn’t know is that there is a big demand for piano lessons in English. At first I didn’t know how this would work with a child that cannot speak English. After 2 years of trial and error I have come up with a way to do both in a fun yet constructive way. In piano lessons there are many words and phrases that are said over and over. Things like “one more time,” “right/left hand” “from the beginning” etc. Each week I try and teach a new word or phrase and from the next lesson I start using that word in English. In time the % of English used in the lesson increases and the student gets used to the sound of English. I think for my younger students they will have an advantage when they begin to study English in school.

Well over the winter break I decided to make a song-book for beginning piano students. The point of the book is to learn simple yet fun songs with useful English words and then play these songs by ear on the piano. I also recorded a CD so that my students could practice the songs at home. It is my voice on the CD.

While the book/CD is intended for piano students (ages 3-8), I think it would be a fun introduction to English for any child. You realize a whole lot its almost tough to argue with you (not that I actually will need
to…HaHa). You certainly put a brand new spin on a subject which has been written about for a long time.
